How are uterine fibroids diagnosed?

• Uterine fibroids are often detected during a routine pelvic exam or a pelvic ultrasound.

• Hysteroscopy: A thin, lighted tube is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus to examine the inside of the uterus and the openings of the fallopian tubes.
• Laparoscopy: A small incision is made in the abdomen and a thin, lighted tube is inserted to view the outside of the uterus and the surrounding organs.
• Hysterosalpingography: A dye is injected into the uterus and the fallopian tubes and an X-ray is taken to see if the dye flows freely or is blocked by fibroids or other abnormalities.
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): A powerful magnet and radio waves are used to create detailed images of the uterus and the fibroids.

What are the treatment options for uterine fibroids?

• The treatment of uterine fibroids depends on the size, number, location, and symptoms of the fibroids, as well as the patient’s age, health, and desire to have children.
• Some of the treatment options are:
• Watchful waiting: If the fibroids are small, asymptomatic, or not growing, they may be monitored with regular pelvic exams and ultrasounds.
• Medications: Hormonal medications, such as birth control pills, progestin-releasing intrauterine devices (IUDs), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, or selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs), may be used to shrink the fibroids or reduce the bleeding and pain.
• Non-surgical procedures: Minimally invasive procedures, such as uterine artery embolization (UAE), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), or focused ultrasound surgery (FUS), may be used to cut off the blood supply or destroy the fibroids without removing the uterus.
• Surgical procedures: If the fibroids are large, symptomatic, or causing infertility, they may be removed surgically, either by myomectomy (removing the fibroids and leaving the uterus intact) or by hysterectomy (removing the entire uterus and the fibroids).
